Premier League bosses ‘advertising for VAR help’ – with no experience required

The PGMOL are reportedly advertising for new VAR officials.

There's a shortage of referees lining up to work at Stockley Park, which is no surprise given the repeated high-profile controversies involving the video assistant referee in the Premier League so far this season.

Mike Dean, for example, left just a season after calling time on his on-field career to take up a punditry position with Sky Sports instead, admitting he hated the role and the anxiety it brought with it.

In an attempt to address the issue, The Sun claim an advert has been distributed to around 75 refs at elite level in the men’s and women’s game asking for "specialist VAR" staff.

The ad is said to be asking for people who can "provide clear communication under pressure” and are “capable of self-reflection on how they have performed".

It also adds you need to be able to “identify when VAR needs to intervene” and have the "ability to focus and have great communication skills" – but little to no experience is required.

The report goes on to suggest those currently working on VAR are taking longer on decisions in fear of the backlash at making the wrong call. That's not helped by a growing belief that they're overstretched due to the lack of officials.

This weekend there are four referees who will be on duty on both Saturday and Sunday, ramping up the pressure even more. Both Liverpool and Arsenal have made statements calling for an improvement in refereeing standards.

The former's came after the shambles involving Luis Diaz's ruled-out goal against Tottenham in September, while the latter's was made last week to back up Mikel Arteta's criticism of allowing Newcastle's goal to stand – which wasn't an error, it's since been confirmed.

Many other managers have also made pointed comments, including Gary O'Neill whose Wolves side have been on the receiving end of more than one incorrect decision which has cost them.
