Joe Burrow’s new bumper contract has seen him become the third highest-paid athlete in major US Sports. 

The new five-year-deal, worth $275m, means that the quarterback is the highest-paid player in NFL history. 

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is also in the top five, following his move to David Beckham’s club back in July. 

The Argentine star has enjoyed a wonderful start to life in the MLS so far. Messi helped guide the club to their first ever trophy back in August – defeating Nashville in the Leagues Cup final.

5) Shea Weber – $110m

NHL star Shea Weber is fifth on the highest-earning list. Weber signed a 14-year-deal with the Nashville Predators back in July 2012.

The contract, worth £88m ($110m) has a cap hit of £6.2m (7.8m) per season. It also included a signing on bonus worth £54.5m ($68m).

In 2023-24, Weber is set to earn a base salary of £802,000 ($1m).

4) Lionel Messi – $150m

Lionel Messi officially signed for David Beckham’s Inter Miami back in July. The Argentinian, who won the World Cup with his beloved nation last year, has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the MLS outfit and is the highest paid player in the league. 

Messi, who won four Champions League titles with Barca and scored 672 goals in 778 games for the club, is believed to have been offered a £60million-a-year ($74m) contract by Inter Miami that includes new deals with adidas and Apple.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will bank money from adidas shirt sales and Apple MLS subscriptions, while the deal is also said to include an option that could see him become a part-owner of the club.

He has enjoyed the perfect start to life in Miami so far, scoring 11 goals in as many games for the club.

3) Joe Burrow – $275m

Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow has agreed to a record £220m ($275m) extension with the side.

The new five-year-deal means that the quarter back is the highest-paid player in NFL history. The extension includes nearly £176.3m ($220m) in guarantees, according to ESPN. 

Burrow, who led the Bengals to AFC North titles the past two seasons and a Super Bowl appearance in 2021, has been negotiating a long-term deal with the Bengals for some time.

While Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has the largest total contract value, at £360.8m ($450m) through 2031, his average-annual salary of £36.8m ($45m) still trails Burrow’s £44.1m ($55m).

2) Jaylen Brown – $304m

Boston Celtic signed Jaylen Brown to a whopping five-year £243m ($304m) extension back in July.

Brown has played seven seasons already in Boston and has established himself as one of the top stars in NBA.

The two-time All-Star averaged a career-high 26.6 points last season. along with 6.9 rebounds per night.

He had previously signed a four-year, £85.2m ($106.3m) contract extension in 2019. Brown’s new deal will take effect for the 2024-25 season.

1) Mike Trout – $426.5m

At No. 1, Mike Trout’s £341m ($426.5m) deal makes him the highest-paid athlete in major US Sports.

The MLB star signed the massive contract extension with the Los Angeles Angels back in 2019.

The 12-year-deal also contains incentives that pay him £40,000 ($50,000) for winning the All-Star Game MVP, £80,000 ($100,000) for winning a Gold Glove, Silver Slugger or ALCS MVP and £400,000 $500,000 for winning the AL MVP. 

His jaw-dropping deal also included a home game suite and Diamond Club seats as a part of the package.
