Serena Williams bids farewell to tennis after US Open defeat
Serena Williams has joked that she “tries to be toxic” with her sister Venus Williams as she replied to a poignant social media video. The duo dominated tennis in their heyday, with Serena winning 23 Grand Slam trophies and Venus getting her hands on seven Major titles. And the pair also teamed up to win 14 Grand Slam doubles tournaments, with their last joint success coming in 2016 when they lifted the Wimbledon trophy.
Venus recently posted a video to her YouTube channel, where she discussed personal toxicity and how to confront it. “I’m going to put my hand up because I like gossip and a little bit of drama just as much as the next person,” the 43-year-old said.
“But I prefer to probably just view other people’s drama than actually have it in my life because it interferes with my productivity and it interferes with where I need to go. I just don’t have the time for it.
“So first of all, you might be enjoying the attention. When you have all this drama, then you’re getting more attention. It’s almost like when that little kid throws a fit for their parents because they want the attention and the attention that they get. And also it’s a way of controlling your environment too. So that attention will come and you thrive on it.”

Venus posted a clip of the video to her Instagram account to guide her fans towards it. And, her sister replied by posting: “I try to be toxic to you.” The comment was clearly made in jest as the sisters have maintained a close relationship throughout their adult life both on and off the court. And Venus would have more than likely laughed off the remark.
Serena won her final Grand Slam at the Australian Open in 2017. She eventually called time on her playing career following the 2022 US Open and paid tribute to her sister and the rest of her family.

“I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus, so thank you, Venus,” the 42-year-old said last year. “She’s the only reason that Serena Williams ever existed. Thank you daddy. I know you’re watching. Thanks mum. Oh my God. I thank everyone that’s here, that’s been on my side so many years, decades. Oh my gosh literally decades. But it all started with my parents. And they deserve everything. So I’m really grateful for them.”
Venus, meanwhile, is still playing on the WTA Tour and was knocked out in the first round at this year’s Wimbledon and US Open.
