Novak Djokovic’s coach shares last career aim after winning 24th Slam at US Open

Novak Djokovic says he will 'keep going' after US Open win

Novak Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic has explained how the new US Open champion is planning to play in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, as a gold medal is one of the few tennis accolades still eluding the Serb in his glittering career. The 36-year-old won his 24th Grand Slam in New York on Sunday, defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to jubilant scenes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Djokovic has extended his record having won more Majors than any other man in tennis history, by claiming three of this season’s four titles and also reaching the Wimbledon final, proving that age is but only a number. The Serb is now setting his sights on the Olympics in five years, according to Ivanisevic.

“Novak is planning to play the Olympics in 2028 in LA,” Ivanisevic said. “I don’t think he will say enough if he wins 25th. He is taking care of every single detail, he is never happy on the court, has a huge drive.

“He’s a winner. He’s the guy who is motivating himself. He had luck to have guys like [Rafa] Nadal and [Roger] Federer, they came before him, so they pushed each other. He’s just enjoying, he likes the challenges. Like you ask me 25 (majors), yeah, if he wins 25 he’s going to think, ‘If I win 25, why not 26?’ It’s always one more, something more.”

Djokovic has achieved so much on the tour but one accolade is missing from his trophy cabinet, an Olympic gold medal. The closest he came was winning bronze in Beijing 2008, but failed to go any further despite three attempts in the London, Rio and Tokyo Games that followed.

Whether his ambition to compete in LA when he is 41 depends on his results at the upcoming Paris 2024 edition of the Games remains to be seen, as he will return to the familiar Roland-Garros setting as surely one of the favourites after confirming his intention to compete at his fifth Olympics.

Novak Djokovic drops retirement hint as Medvedev left with ‘s**t’ gift for wife[LATEST]

The 36-year-old has declared he will only retire when he gets his “a**” kicked by the younger players at major events, which looks to be in the distant future having lost only one match at this year’s four Majors – the SW19 final to Carlos Alcaraz.

“I don’t want to even consider leaving tennis or thinking about an end if I’m still at the top of the game,” Djokovic said before his final win over Medvedev. “I will probably consider doing that if I get my a** kicked by young guys in Grand Slams in the years to come.”
