Novak Djokovic says he will 'keep going' after US Open win

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are on the opposite side of the Paris Masters draw and can meet in Sunday’s final, but may have already given fans a glimpse into what that showpiece would look like. The superstars surprisingly practised with each other on the eve of the tournament, despite fears of giving away their secrets in France.

Footage emerged on social media on Sunday of Djokovic and Alcaraz rallying during a practice session, with the pair going back and forth before a stunning forehand from this year’s Wimbledon champion saw Djokovic give up the point. Alcaraz also shared a picture on social media after their session as he wrote: “I’m in Paris! Great practice with @DjokerNole today! Vamos!”

The top two seeds cannot meet in Paris before the final, at which point Djokovic could be usurped by Alcaraz as victory for the new generation’s star would see him retake the world No 1 spot in the rankings.

After showcasing their talents against each other in practice, former Paris Masters winner Greg Rusedski took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to react to the practice session and wrote: “Can’t wait for the last master series of the year. This won’t be a bad final to finish on. Who is learning more about the other guy’s game in this practice session?”

Fans in the comments suggested that both Djokovic and Alcaraz would be learning plenty from each other at Bercy as they will be hoping to meet in Sunday’s final. First, Alcaraz will face the winner of first-round match between wildcard Alexandre Muller and qualifier Roman Safiullin.

Alcaraz suffered an injury in Paris last year that ended his season in the quarter-finals, before six-time champion Djokovic was beaten in the final by Holger Rune. The Serb could face either his fellow countryman Miomir Kecmanovic or Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round.

Despite being clear contenders for every tournament they compete in, Djokovic and Alcaraz clearly have a strong mutual respect for each other which was showcased by their willingness to practice together in Paris.

Speaking after their blockbuster Wimbledon final that saw Alcaraz come out on top, Djokovic said: “People have been talking about his game consisting of certain elements from Roger [Federer], Rafa [Nadal], and myself. I’d agree with that. He’s basically got the best of all three worlds… I haven’t played a player like him ever.”

Alcaraz then returned the favour and said: “I really have to congratulate Novak, you inspire me so much. I started playing tennis, watching you. When I was born, you were already winning tournaments! And you’re in better shape than me.”
