Assessing Man Utd's start to the Premier League season | Football Digest
Mason Greenwood made his return to football after a 20-month absence in Getafe’s 3-2 win against Osasuna on Sunday, and keen-eyed viewers noticed an interesting feature of his appearance. The Manchester United forward has resumed his career on a season-long loan in Madrid.
Greenwood entered the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez pitch with 13 minutes to play and the score level at 2-2.
The 21-year-old unsurprisingly looked short on match fitness but provided glimpses of the promise that once earned him the ‘wonderkid’ title on the Old Trafford terraces.
He excited home fans with a trademark stepover and powerful strike, earning Getafe the 86th-minute corner, which produced the La Liga outfit’s winning goal.
Many viewers tuning in or following his exploits on social media noticed that Greenwood was wearing Nike boots despite the sportswear giant dropping him as an athlete.
He lost the sponsorship after being arrested in January 2022, and he was later charged with attempted assault, rape and coercive and controlling behaviour.
Greenwood strongly denied all allegations, and the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges against him in February of this year after the withdrawal of key witnesses.

Despite his freedom to continue his football career away from United, it was a surprise to see him donning Nike boots after the company had recently confirmed they hadn’t picked him back up.
During footage of his first Getafe training sessions after joining on transfer deadline day, Greenwood was also spotted wearing Nike.
But Nike insisted to GB News that he was no longer associated with the American brand. A spokesperson said: “The statement still holds true. Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.”
Getafe have welcomed Greenwood with open arms since his arrival in Spain, launching an English X (formerly Twitter) account to provide content about his development at the club.
United reportedly performed a last-minute U-turn on Greenwood’s future after receiving mass backlash over Richard Arnold’s leaked plans to reintegrate him into Erik ten Hag’s squad.

The official line from the club remains that it is unlikely that their former No 11 will represent them again, regardless of his impact at Getafe.
But Arnold pledged to support Greenwood in kick-starting his stalled career away from Old Trafford.
Part of a statement read: “While I am satisfied that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with, Mason’s accepted that he has made mistakes which he takes responsibility for.
“I am also mindful of the challenge that Mason would face rebuilding his career and raising a baby together with his partner in the harsh spotlight of Manchester United.
“Further, this case has provoked strong opinions, and it is my responsibility to minimise any distraction to the unity we are seeking within the club.”
