West Ham prepare to offer Jesse Lingard a short-term contract after impressing in training… but David Moyes wants assurances over his commitment before approving a deal

West Ham are expected to make a short-term contract offer to Jesse Lingard during the international break.

The former England international has been impressing staff at the club’s Rush Green training ground since he has returned though manager David Moyes wants to be sure about the player’s commitment before giving the deal the green light.

An incentivised deal until the end of the season with an option is considered to be the most likely course of action.

Moyes is keen to get an extra attacking player after deals for Corinthians’ Yuri Alberto and Hugo Ekitike of PSG faltered in the last throws of the window.

Lingard remains a free agent after leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of last season.

The 30-year-old had a disappointing spell at the City Ground after joining Steve Cooper’s side on a one-year contract.

Lingard failed to score or provide an assist in 17 Premier League appearances for Forest.

The midfielder featured just three times in the league since January, with two coming as fleeting substitute appearances.

Lingard had opted to join Forest over West Ham last summer, after being offered a more lucrative package that was believed to be worth £200,000 per-week.

This led to a badly-tempered game last August between the clubs at the City Ground when Hammers supporters threw fake £50 notes at Lingard.

Lingard had previous starred for West Ham during a loan spell from Man United in the second half of the 2020-21 campaign.

During his time at the London Stadium, the attacking midfielder excelled, adding nine goals and five assists in just 16 games.
