‘We hate Scots’ chant sparked street fight between England and Scotland fans

England and Scotland are once again set to do battle as Gareth Southgate's side travel up north to face Steve Clarke's men at Hampden Park on Tuesday evening.

The friendly, which is being played to celebrate the first ever international football match played between the two back in 1872, 150 years ago, will see both teams wear special anniversary kits during their respective warm-ups – which won't be on general sale.

Instead, the shirts will be auctioned off for charity, raising funds for the Alzheimer's Society. But while that gesture is a positive sign that will benefit plenty of people, the last time England and Scotland faced off there was plenty of negativity in the air.

Facing off during the group stages of Euro 2020 back in 2021, Scotland travelled down to Wembley to take on their arch rival, looking to bounce back after having lost their opener 2-0 to the Czech Republic. England on the other hand had just beaten Croatia 1-0.

But while the game finished 0-0 in London, shocking scenes unfolded across the capital, with tensions between both sets of fans spilling over that led to violence, which also happened back in 2016 too.

It was estimated feared that prior to the game, 20,000 Scots would be descending upon London, a staggering number at the time given there were still COVID-19 guidelines in place.

One video posted to social media showed England fans taunting Scotland supporters, chanting: "we f***ing hate Scotland." Of course, that chant did not sit too well with the Scotland fans, with a fight breaking out as a result.

The video showed one man being shoved up against a taxi, with another throwing a bottle of water over a man – only to fall over completely untouched.

Thankfully, this instance of violence ended when one of the Scotland fans wearing a kilt bellowed at the top of his lungs: "hawl that’s enough."

After the 0-0 draw at Wembley, police also clashed with fans of both teams at Leicester Square, with a total of 30 arrests being made following the disorder and chaos that unfolded.
