Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has been warned that a lack of squad depth will be his side’s downfall in a potential Premier League title race. Andy Townsend and Ally McCoist both believe Spurs do not have the resources to maintain their superb start to the season.
Tottenham continued their unbeaten start with a comfortable 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday. Goals from Son Heung-min and James Maddison ensured they went back to the top of the table, two points clear of Manchester City and Arsenal.
Postecoglou has so far been fortunate with a lack of injuries, mostly being able to call upon the same 12 or 13 players from the start of matches. Spurs’ lack of European football this season has surely contributed to that.
But former Chelsea midfielder Townsend and Rangers legend McCoist question whether that luck will last. Townsend says there is no doubt that injuries will hit the Spurs squad at some point.

He thinks that is the only problem that will prevent them from sustaining a title challenge. Townsend told talkSPORT: “That’s the only thing with Spurs.
“We were talking coming home, the only thing is if any of these boys, and it will happen he is going to lose players, Ange, can the boys coming in continue to get them results? That’s the million dollar question, everybody’s the same, everyone gets injuries, suspensions, you name it, whatever.
“Players go out of form, you’ve got to offer other people an opportunity here and there. That’s the only thing for Spurs but there is a lot to like about what they’re doing.”
Postecoglou used all five substitutes during the second half of Monday’s win. But McCoist claims that a clear drop off in performance from the back-up brigade is a concern.

The Scot said: “It’s difficult coming on as a substitute, particularly late on when you think the game’s won. But there was an element that the substitutes didn’t strengthen them at all.
“I wouldn’t go as far as saying they completely weakened them but I didn’t think they were great. They brought Emerson Royal on and [Alejo] Veliz and people like that.
“As I say you’ve got to cut them a little bit of slack because it looks as though the game’s won, it’s hard coming on. But I think you make a great point, the squad I’m not sure is strong enough to go the full way if they get one or two injuries or suspensions.”
