- CHRIS SUTTON: I was RIGHT to call Man United players ‘snakes’ last week
Chris Sutton has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino looked ‘bewildered’ during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat by Everton and slammed the Blues’ progress under him.
Pochettino’s side were handed their seventh defeat of the Premier League campaign on Sunday after Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin struck for the hosts.
It was the latest disappointing performance for the west London giants, who are yet to find their form under the former Tottenham and PSG manager.
And, reflecting on the match, Mail Sport’s Sutton and Ian Ladyman slammed the lack of progress made under Pochettino on It’s All Kicking Off.
Ladyman said: ‘Chris, I think we finally reached what you might call peak Chelsea.

‘Chelsea spent over a billion pounds in the Todd Boehly era and now Mauricio Pochettino says he wants him to spend some more!’
Sutton responded: ‘Yeah, that’s pretty alarming. Pochettino nailing those colors to his mast, that he needs more players in at this moment in time. They have been so odd this season.
‘I think that, in many respects, Pochettino’s been getting away with it. But now, you look at the results, you look at where they are in the league, their position. They are the sixth best team in London. Think about that.
‘The sixth best team in London at this moment in time. When was the last time Chelsea were the sixth best team in London? With the spend and it not coming together… I don’t know whether the pressure’s on or not.
‘But they can’t just keep sort of tiptoeing through the season and us not putting them under scrutiny. In their recent past, they have been serial winners, huge winners, won all the big trophies in the last 20 years under the Abramovich era.
‘And now, you know, last season was disappointing. People forget where Chelsea have been getting away with it this season, no European football. That’s a massive, massive advantage. And performances just haven’t been there’.
The podcast co-hosts went on to compare the reaction to Chelsea’s struggles to those of Manchester United, who have been lamented for their performances.
Pochettino watched on as his out-of-form Chelsea side were beaten by the struggling Toffees
Ian Ladyman echoed the thoughts of his podcast co-host, as he suggested that Chelsea have escaped criticism for their poor performances in what has been a disastrous season so far
Ladyman continued: ‘If Manchester United were in this position, it’d be back page, front page, middle page, everything. And Chelsea aren’t even on the back of some of the papers this morning.
‘And I think one of the reasons for that is we’ve got to a point now where people just almost shrug their shoulders and say, “Oh, it’s just Chelsea. It’s what they do”. And that in itself is a great indictment of the fact we half expect it, it doesn’t shock us’.
Sutton then responded: ‘We spoke about Pochettino and him looking bewildered – it’s the right word!’
Ladyman then continued: ‘I saw Chelsea get beat by Manchester United last Wednesday night, and having previously seen them narrowly beat Brighton at home, against United, they were wretched without the ball.
The Blues secured a narrow win over Brighton prior to defeat against Man United and Everton
The Blues were comfortably second-best when they travelled to Old Trafford this month
‘With the ball, they created chances, didn’t take them, that’s another strand of this conversation we can go down.
‘They created chances against United, that game could have been about four or all, but without the ball they were absolutely wretched.
‘And they must have been, again, to lose 2-0 yesterday at Everton, given that Everton only had 28% of the play, and they still scored twice.
‘So that makes me think again that they weren’t very clever when they didn’t have the ball. That’s where your coaching comes in, isn’t it? That’s where your managers got to find the fix’.
