It’s not all end-to-end football and non-stop excitement at Manchester United, as Sam Allardyce appeared to demonstrate while sat next to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former England manager was in the directors’ box next to the legendary United manager for the Red Devils’ narrow 1-0 home victory over Luton Town. Having lost to Copenhagen in the Champions League, there was a tense atmosphere in Old Trafford.

This was reflected in the first half when Erik ten Hag’s men were unable to break Town’s resistance. United’s struggle to crack the Hatters was evidently not to Allardyce’s liking, as the ex-Premier League boss let out an almighty yawn in the stands.

The cameras managed to spot Allardyce and Ferguson were side-by-side in the directors’ box. The camera operator found them at the perfect moment as, almost on cue, Allardyce yawned and looked like he was about to suck up Old Trafford.

During the club’s best years under Ferguson, there was an old legend which used to say the United fans would suck the ball into the opposition goal. How Ten Hag wishes that adage was true – whether it was the fans or one of Allardyce's yawns!

United were heavy favourites going into their match against Luton. However, after the Hatters were minutes away from securing a memorable victory against Liverpool in their last match, Ten Hag insisted he was not taking Town lightly in his pre-match press conference.

While reflecting on the early stages of their loss to Copenhagen, which saw Rasmus Hojlund give United an early lead, Ten Hag challenged his players to find that same intensity by saying: “yes, we are aiming for that.

"It’s very good to see that we had the composure, we built the right constructions and we made good decisions on the ball. In the right moments we fought to speed up the game and we scored a lovely goal.

“That’s the way we want to play. I hope we can build on that and I hope that we see that more often. But against Luton, that’s not a team that will make it easy. They will press us strongly and defend very deep and make it very compact, so we have to be very good in possession to build the right constructions and to get us into situations where we can speed up the game.”
