PSG fire ‘elegance’ dig at Neymar over claim ‘Messi and I were living in hell’

PSG have hit back after Neymar claimed he and Lionel Messi were "living in hell" during their time at the club.

Both Neymar, 31, and Messi, 36, left the French capital this summer, with the former joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in a £78million move and the latter heading to MLS club Inter Miami on a free transfer.

The former Barcelona pair failed to deliver the Ligue 1 champions an elusive Champions League trophy, with Messi's two-year spell being particularly disappointing.

Neymar, who spent six years at the Parc des Princes stadium, spoke out about his experiences last week. He told Brazilian outlet Globo: "I was very happy for the year he (Messi) had, but at the same time very sad.

"Because he lived both sides of the coin, he went to heaven with the Argentina team, won everything in recent years, and with Paris he lived hell. We lived through hell, both he and I.

"We get upset, because we're not there for nothing, we're there to do our best, be champions, try to make history, that's why we started playing together again, we came together there so we could make history."

PSG have now responded with a brief statement to L'Equipe, pointedly saying: “We don't comment, we have a certain elegance. Curiously, both players wanted to stay at PSG.”

Their manager Luis Enrique refused to discuss Neymar's comments in his post-match interview after beating Lyon 4-1 on their travels on Sunday (September 3).

He said: "These are personal experiences, I don't want to get into that. I can tell you about my experience: I'm absolutely delighted. I feel like I'm in charge of a rather unique team with a club that trusts me 100 per cent."

Neymar also said he felt Messi, who departed before him, was treated poorly by the Parisians. "Messi left in a way that, for football, he didn't deserve," he argued.

"For everything he is, everything he does, anyone who knows him knows, he is a guy who trains, who fights, if he loses he gets angry, and he was unfairly treated in my opinion.

"But at the same time I was very happy that he won the World Cup. As you said, football was fair this time, since the Brazilian team lost, Messi deserved to end his career like this."
