Mo Salah wins FIFTH Player of the Month award… ending Spurs' run

Mo Salah wins his FIFTH Premier League Player of the Month award -making him the most-honoured active player – as the Liverpool star becomes the first non-Tottenham player to win since the start of the season

  • The Egypt international has scored five times in three league games in October
  • Previously Tottenham had the monopoly on Premier League awards this season
  • Why Luton are team that can stay up from promoted clubs: It’s All Coming Up

Mohamed Salah has finally shattered Tottenham’s Premier League award monopoly with the Liverpool star the first non-Spurs player named Player of the Month this season.

The Egypt international has been in fine fettle for the Reds, who have enjoyed an unbeaten October featuring wins against Nottingham Forest and Everton.

Salah scored five during the month, with two coming against Brighton to ensure the points were shared at the Amex, and both of the goals in the Merseyside derby.

That match at Anfield also marked the 15th consecutive Premier League match that the 31-year-old had either scored or assisted as one of the catalysts of Klopp’s ‘Liverpool 2.0’.

The forward’s towering Premier League run continued with his goal against Nottingham Forest, but Salah was unable to make it 17 in a row on a frustrating day at Kenilworth Road that saw Luton Town hold the visitors to a 1-0.

With the collection of his fifth award, Salah becomes the only active Premier League player to have won as many of the league honours, and moves ahead of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in the all-time rankings.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Steven Gerrard, and Sergio Aguero have won more Player of the Month awards.

Astoundingly, Salah’s collection of the award marks the first time this season that the Premier League has honoured a player or manager not afiliated with Tottenham, on the heels of Ange Postecoglou’s glorious start to life in north London.

The Australian manager picked up the award for Manager of the Month for August, September, and October, whilst James Maddison picked up August’s Player of the Month, and Son Heung-min September’s.

Postecoglou and his players made history with the back-to-back honours, and the manager himself emulated Klopp with the first two awards of the season – a feat that his German counterpart achieved at the start of Liverpool’s 2019-20 title-winning season.

Spurs’ blistering unbeaten run came a hair-raising end at home on Monday evening during a calamitous 4-1 defeat to crosstown rivals Chelsea as the side went down to nine men.

The chaotic match – which saw five goals disallowed – might also have sparked the beginning of a nail-biting moment for the side after an early purple patch.

Both Maddison and key summer signing Micky van de Ven were forced off during the tie due to injury, with the England international on Friday ruled out for a possible three months after ligament damage was found during the assessment of his ankle.

Liverpool will look to get back to winning ways against Brentford after a draw with Luton and defeat to Toulouse in the Europa League

It isn’t yet known how long Van de Ven will be sidelined with hamstring damage, but the club confirmed that the defender will not have to undergo surgery on Thursday.

Posecoglou will also be unable to call upon Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero for upcoming Premier League ties after both players picked up red cards against the Blues.

Currently sitting third in the Premier League table, Liverpool will look to bounce back from defeat in the Europa League against Brentford when they welcome the west London side to Anfield on Sunday.

Klopp’s side had a late equaliser disallowed against Toulouse on Thursday evening, but despite defeat on the road, the Reds still top Group E with just two matchdays left to play.
