Mikel Arteta has been charged by the FA after his outburst against VAR following Arsenal's 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle.

The Arsenal boss had a major meltdown after the defeat earlier this month which was their first this season in the Premier League. Anthony Gordon's winner was checked by VAR for three separate infringements but the potential issues weren't enough to disallow the goal which eventually secured Newcastle all three points.

On top of the VAR issues, Arsenal felt that Bruno Guimaraes escaped a red card after hitting Jorginho in the back of the head which all became too much for Arteta to handle as the Spaniard blew his top during his post-match press conference.

The former Arsenal captain said the decision to allow Gordon's goal was "embarrassing". He continued: "How the hell did this goal stand up? It's embarrassing,” raged the Spaniard. “It’s an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed to stand. It’s more than one reason. It is a disgrace. It is not a goal, simple. I feel sick to be part of this."

His comments certainly didn't fare well with the FA who released a statement on Thursday (November 16) stating that he's been charged. It read: "Mikel Arteta has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1.

"It happens following comments that he made in media interviews after Arsenal’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Saturday 4 November."

Arteta's initial comments were backed by his club who released a statement lamenting the officiating during the loss at St James' Park as Arsenal urged the PGMOL to "address the standard of officiating". "Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening," the statement began.

"We’d also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James’ Park. The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better.

"PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies. We support the ongoing efforts of Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands."
