Mason Greenwood has shared a message to Getafe fans for the first time since completing a deadline day loan move from Manchester United.

The Spanish club will not be paying a fee for the English forward, but will cover a small contribution for his wages for the duration of the loan.

Greenwood hasn’t played competitive football since December 2021, after he was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape.

The 21-year-old was subsequently suspended by the club, however, in February the Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped the charges after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light.

And now, after sealing a temporary move to Spain, the first images of Greenwood with the club’s colours have emerged on social media.

The club’s official Twitter page shared an image of Greenwood in Getafe colours on Monday night following his shocking move to Spain.

The winger had a smile on his face as he held up the club’s home strip and posed alongside a large version of their club badge.

A video of Greenwood addressing the club’s fans was also posted onto their Twitter account where the forward said: ‘Hi Getafe fans, it’s Mason here.

‘I’m so happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started’ before showing a thumbs up to the camera’.

The former England international is set to be officially presented to Getafe fans, along with their other summer signings, on Tuesday afternoon.

It was confirmed on Monday that the winger will wear the number 12 for the LaLiga side during this season.

Getafe posted a video of jubilant fans on social media after news broke he was to join the Madrid-based club for the season. The club finished 15th in Spain’s top-flight last season.

There was also interest in signing Greenwood from Lazio, Olympiacos and Red Star Belgrade before he made the move to Spain.

Lazio held extensive talks over signing the forward on deadline day last Friday but ran out of time to complete a deal with United.

Meanwhile, Getafe boss Jose Bordalas recently defended the club’s decision to sign Greenwood and insisted that it was a ‘delicate situation’.

Asked about the decision to sign the one-cap England international after his side’s 2-1 league defeat at Real Madrid on Saturday, Bordalas told a press conference: ‘It is a very delicate situation to trivialise that issue.

The 21-year-old forward has not played any competitive football since January last year

‘Everyone knows what happened and appropriate measures were taken. Everyone knows how it ended, with a non-convictory sentence.

‘He is a footballer of a very high level and arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm.’

Initial reports suggest that United may try to reintegrate Greenwood into the first team squad after the conclusion of an internal investigation.

However after massive backlash, particularly online, United revealed last week he would be leaving the club by mutual agreement.
