Man Utd got their season back on track with Burnley victory | Football Digest
Manchester United may still be kicking themselves for passing up on the chance to sign Kieran Trippier while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still in charge. The England international is one of Newcastle United’s most consistent players, and he reaffirmed his importance to the side in the thumping win over Sheffield United on Sunday.
Trippier helped himself to three assists against the Blades – an impressive showing from right-back in a game which saw Newcastle win 8-0 with eight different goal-scorers. Even the likes of Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn and Sven Botman got in on the act to pile pressure on Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom.
The Magpies have now steadied the ship after a rocky start to the season, and with Trippier as captain, they will look to build on the surprise top-four finish they managed in 2022/23.
The 33-year-old has gone up a level since arriving on Tyneside, confirming to United that they dropped a clanger by not signing him in the summer of 2021.

When asked last year whether the Red Devils had been chasing him, Trippier told The Mirror: “Yes they were. There were a couple of clubs. Me and [Atletico Madrid] manager [Diego Simeone] had a chat at the start of the season and agreed if an opportunity came up I might go.
“I had a couple of family problems. To be fair they didn’t want to come back. It didn’t happen, so I carried on. I am not one to throw my toys out of the pram when it doesn’t happen. I didn’t have to leave Madrid. I want to make that clear. I loved it there and it was a successful time. I had a few options as well. But for my family it was important.”

In the end, Newcastle pounced just a few months after United’s failed pursuit, tying down the experienced full-back for just £12million. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot are currently battling it out for the right-back spot at Old Trafford, where Trippier would surely be a starter if things had turned out differently.
The veteran has more than 40 England caps on his CV, as well as spells with Burnley and Tottenham. Meanwhile, his two-and-a-half-year stint in La Liga with Atletico Madrid brought him a coveted league title.
United boss Erik ten Hag is currently down to the bare-bones in defence, with Sergio Reguilon and Dalot his only fit full-backs. The Dutchman would undoubtedly love a player of Trippier’s experience to carry his side through a stressful period, which was eased by a 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday.
And it was an old head that made the difference at Turf Moor, with Jonny Evans producing a magical assist for Bruno Fernandes to volley home the winner.
