Man Utd learn Sofyan Amrabat injury update after Morocco star pulls out of squad

Man Utd players' feelings towards Jadon Sancho after latest Erik ten Hag spat

Manchester United have learned the severity of Sofyan Amrabat’s injury scare after the Old Trafford new boy withdrew from international duty on Thursday. Morocco confirmed Amrabat had been replaced in Walid Regragui’s squad to face Liberia and Burkina Faso in the coming week.

The 27-year-old flew out to represent his country earlier this week after completing a dream deadline-day switch to United.

The Red Devils have signed Amrabat on a season-long loan worth £8.5million with the option to buy him for around £17m.

But concerns were raised on Thursday evening when Morocco announced that he had dropped out of contention for the nation’s upcoming games.

A statement read: “Mr Walid Regragui invited Yahya Gibran, a player for the Wydad Sports Club, to join the national team as it prepares for the two matches it will play against Liberia in Agadir and Burkina Faso in Lens, France.

“The national team coach, Mr. Walid Regragui, summoned the player, Yahya Jeeran, to replace the injured Sofyan Amrabat.

“On the other hand, the national team will head tomorrow, Friday, to Agadir, where it will have its last training session before the match with Liberia, which will take place the day after tomorrow, Saturday.”

Amrabat’s absence would compile injury misery onto Ten Hag, who is already without a handful of key names.

Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Mason Mount are among those on the injury table, and there are fears Amrabat will have to wait for his debut.

However, Moroccan journalist Izem Anass has eased concerns by reporting that the former Fiorentina star’s injury isn’t serious.

Morocco have seemingly opted against risking Amrabat in their upcoming fixtures so he can return to United after the international break at 100 per cent.

After he completed his United move, The Athletic claimed that the club pushed through the deal despite detecting a minor back problem during his medical.

It’s unclear whether that issue has flared up during international training this week or Amrabat has taken precautionary measures to guarantee a smooth start at his new club.

Ten Hag will likely look to throw Amrabat into the deep end and could name him in his starting lineup when Brighton and Hove Albion visit Old Trafford next Saturday.

United travel to Bayern Munich to start their Champions League campaign just a few days later, where Ten Hag is bound to need as much defensive quality as possible.
