Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s job may well have been saved for at least a short while longer with Harry Maguire popping up with an important goal against Copenhagen and Andre Onana saving a penalty in the final kick of the game. Express Sport takes a look at four things learned from their first Champions League win of the season.
Ten Hag out of ideas
Maguire saved United’s blushes on what was otherwise an uninspired performance at Old Trafford and serious questions will surely be asked on Erik ten Hag’s future. Wins over Brentford and Sheffield United have been less than inspiring and they were disjointed for most of the game against Copenhagen.
Scott McTominay appeared to be the only player trying to do something for United, but the players look disjointed in Ten Hag’s system. Ten Hag’s job will be safe for as long as they’re still in with a chance of progressing to the knockout phase. But that’s far from being a given.
Midfield three out of sync
Ten Hag still hasn’t been able to find a system that works in midfield this season. The arrivals of Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat have failed to fix the issues from last year and even appear to have confused things even more.

Mount’s move from Chelsea has so far been a failure while Amrabat hasn’t found his feet and Bruno Fernandes has seemingly buckled under the pressure of the captain’s armbamd. Ten Hag will need to work out a way to get his midfield ticking quickly, but it’s still unclear what his best trio is.
Uninspired attack
There is definitely a talent in Rasmus Hojlund. A bit of a rough diamond, but at least he has tried to show some passion on the pitch. That can’t be said for most around him though with neither Marcus Rashford or Antony doing enough out wide.

Hojlund cut a lonely figure for much of the match and he continued to drop deep to try and get on the ball. Fixing United’s lack of attacking intent is arguably Ten Hag’s biggest issue to fix.
Bigger ramifications
We’re halfway through the group stages and United are currently third in their group. United couldn’t afford to drop points against Copenhagen and they got the job done, but it was far from convincing.
Bayern will fancy their chances of recording another win over United and away trips to Galatarasaray and Copenhagen won’t be easy. It’s up to Ten Hag’s side to determine whether this win will be in vein or whether it can kickstart their European campaign.
