Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou said he has never been a fan of VAR after their 2-1 win over Liverpool
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has been told to ‘go home and cry’ by his Argentina teammate Cristian Romero following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham. The Reds battled valiantly over the course of 90 minutes, especially after being reduced to nine men, but a last-minute own goal from Joel Matip proved decisive.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were given even more of a reason to be disappointed as they left North London as PGMOL released a statement shortly after full-time apologising for an error made in the match. Following Curtis Jones’ dismissal, Luis Diaz appeared to put Liverpool ahead after he fired past Guglielmo Vicario with a sensational solo effort.
However, the goal was ruled out after the linesman lifted his flag to indicate that he believed that the winger was offside – and VAR took a brief look at the incident and approved of the on-field decision. But it has since emerged that Diaz was played onside by the outstretched leg of Romero – with suggestions that VAR knew that winger was onside but green-lighted the decision made by the officials at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they thought that the goal had actually been given.
Liverpool were understandably left furious by the result, with Mac Allister not shying away from making his point on social media. Following the full-time whistle, Romero posted a few photos from the match on Instagram with the caption: “This team has great spirit, great heart. Always like this, all together.”

Ex-Brighton star Mac Allister soon replied in the comments section, writing in Spanish: “Normal when you play 12,” implying that the officials favoured Tottenham during their bout on Saturday. Romero quickly snapped back though, replying: “Go home and cry.”
Given that tempers flared during the match, it is unclear as to whether the Argentine duo were joking during their exchange or whether there will be a frosty meeting between the pair later this month when they link up with the rest of the World Cup-winning squad for international duty, with matches against Paraguay and Peru to be played.

Tottenham’s victory means that they have moved up to second in the Premier League and remained unbeaten in their opening seven matches of the campaign, bolstering Ange Postecoglou’s chances of guiding the club to a top-four finish in his debut season at their helm.
In contrast, Liverpool dropped to fourth in the table after tasting defeat for the first time this season. Klopp will be hoping that the controversial nature of the defeat will provide his squad with the fuel to bounce back to form when they travel to Brighton next weekend.
