Liverpool own goal dubbed ‘world class finish’ helps Tottenham shed ‘Spursy’ tag

Fans reckon Tottenham have shaken their 'Spursy' tag after Joel Matip's 96th-minute own goal sealed a 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

The last-gasp winner was Tottenham's second in as many weeks after having come from behind to beat Sheffield United with two goals right at the death earlier this month. Liverpool were seconds away from taking a point from a game they'd spent the bulk of which defending for their lives after going down to nine men.

Curtis Jones got a straight red card for a crunching studs-up challenge on Yves Bissouma in the first-half while Diogo Jota received his marching orders with 20 minutes to play after a reckless lunge on Destiny Udogie which earned himself a second yellow. But for all Tottenham's possession, clear-cut chances were few and far between.

With seconds remaining, and with Ange Postecoglou's side thoroughly out of ideas, Pedro Porro made one final dash for the by-line, and drove a low-driven cross into the six-yard area. Matip, who had defended like a Trojan for 95 minutes, swung his left boot at it and watched in horror as the ball ricochet off his shin and into the top corner.

The Cameroon international will be lucky to slot a ball home as comprehensively as that ever again, and fans on social media lavished him with ironic praise after the game. "That is genuinely a world class finish from Matip," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"Matip nearly took the net off with that own goal. What a finish," another joked, while a third added: "Got to feel for Matip. He'll never hit a ball sweeter and it was in the wrong goal!"

Spurs took the lead just a few minutes after Liverpool went down to 10 men, with Son Heung-min tapping a Richarlison cross home from close-range. Liverpool equalised right on half-time through Cody Gakpo, but Jota's red on 69 minutes turned the game into something that resembled an attack vs defence training exercise.

The win is Tottenham's first against Liverpool since October 2017 in a run that stretches back a whopping 12 matches. The result moved Tottenham up to second in the table, a point above Liverpool and a point behind Manchester City. It also means Tottenham and Arsenal are the only two Premier League clubs left with undefeated records. How very un-Spursy.
