Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp makes ‘standout’ comment about Darwin Nunez

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has hailed Darwin Nunez as his “standout” player from the Reds’ victory over Brentford on Sunday. The Uruguay international, who had two goals ruled out before teeing up Mohamed Salah’s opener, produced a scintillating performance at Anfield to help his side to a 3-0 victory. Nunez has come under fire in recent weeks and was labelled wasteful following Liverpool’s trip to Luton last weekend.

Nunez proved to be a constant menace during the visit of Brentford and found the back of the net twice in the first half. But the strikes, which included a sensational overhead kick, were both ruled out for offside. The former Benfica star linked up with Salah time and time again throughout the encounter and impacted the game in a positive way as Liverpool continued their fine form at Anfield.

“Standout was Darwin because Brentford wanted long balls so he started the pressing,” Klopp told reporters after the final whistle. “Work-rate was insane.”

Liverpool had won all five of their previous home Premier League matches this season ahead of the visit of Brentford and made light work of their west London opponents as Salah slotted past Mark Flekken six minutes before the interval.

The Egypt international then headed in a cross from Kostas Tsimikas just after the hour mark after being left unmarked in the penalty area. And Diogo Jota wrapped up the three points in the 74th minute as he curled a sumptuous effort into the corner of the goal from the edge of the box.

“Goal No 200 in England, right?” continued Klopp as he spoke about Salah’s brace. “Exceptional, played a super game today. Two players always around him, he kept the ball. We had so many good moments first half. Composure for first goal is insane. No doubt in that area, you see it on the scoresheet. Special player.”

And the German added: “Losing a game [on Thursday in the Europa League], playing not too well makes not a lot of sense. We needed to make the right conclusion from that. I’m really pleased. We used the opportunity to lose to Toulouse to react today. How we controlled the moments we could control was absolutely exceptional. When we got the ball down and played football. We were super dangerous and scored wonderful goals.

“We can create an atmosphere, the people are ready. They are always ready to go and we must react to that. It was like that again today. The boys showed passion. Anfield did the rest. It’s a special place, we all know that.”
