Leyton Orient issue statement after match abandoned due to medical emergency

Leyton Orient have issued a brief statement after their League One match against Lincoln City on Tuesday night was abandoned due to a medical emergency. Orient were leading by a single goal after Joe Pigott’s early opener before the game was cut short with 82 minutes having been played at Brisbane Road.

Stewards raced over to an area at the front of the East Stand, with many home supporters frantically calling for the match to be stopped. Play went on for several minutes while the supporter was being treated before a fan ventured onto the pitch to inform the referee of the situation.

The game continued on before a group of Orient fans hopped the barriers and sat in front of the goal in a desperate bid to get the game paused. Proceedings were finally halted in the 82nd minute before the fixture was eventually abandoned as the supporter continued to receive potentially life-saving treatment.

Orient issued a brief update via X, formerly Twitter, after it had been confirmed that the match would not be played to its conclusion.

They said: “This evening’s match will not be restarted due to the ongoing medical emergency in the East Stand. All of our hopes are prayers are with the supporter and his loved ones at this incredibly distressing time.”

A short statement was also issued by Lincoln, who added: “All our thoughts are with the Orient supporter at this time.”

The decision to abandon the match was announced nearly an hour after it was paused, with the fan in question still being treated by paramedics as supporters left the ground. Orient were clinging on to a narrow lead at the time of the stoppage after Pigott had diverted the ball home from Ruel Sotiriou’s low cross in only the 10th minute.

Both sides played some neat football under the lights at Brisbane Road, with Hakeeb Adelakun, Ethan Hamilton and Max Sanders going close for the visitors as they hunted an equaliser. Orient midfielder Idris El Mizouni then saw a powerful header clawed away by Imps goalkeeper Lucas Jensen before the medical emergency stopped play with eight minutes remaining.

The lack of any points awarded saw Lincoln stay 12th in the League One table, although they currently sit just three points adrift of the play-off places. Orient, meanwhile, are down in 17th but are five points clear of the relegation zone as things stand, with both sides having at least one game in hand over the other teams in the division.
