The German national team have reportedly come to an agreement with Julian Nagelsmann for the former Bayern Munich boss to take over until the upcoming European Championship.

The former Bayern manager has been out of work since being sacked by the German titans last season, to be replaced by ex-Chelsea and PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.

There were reports linking Nagelsmann to the then-vacant role at PSG, only for Luis Enrique to be named new manager in the French capital.

He had been under contract at Bayern, despite not being their manager, with the club thought to be able to demand a fee for any side willing to take him on, but that contract is now believed to be terminated, leaving him free to join Germany.

Now, though, the 36-year-old, regarded among the best young managers in Europe, could be set for a sensational return to the dugout for the national team.

According to German outlet BILD, the German manager is set to forego around £17million in wages that he would earn at Bayern until 2026 in order to take the hot seat for the German national team.

That is not to say that Nagelsmann will be earning nothing while in charge of Die Mannschaft.

Reports claim that he is set to earn some £3.5m for working up until next summer, now that his contract with the Bavarians is reportedly terminated in full.

Once the manager’s tenure is over, he will then go back on the market, with no indications as yet that he will remain in charge.

The upcoming European Championship will be played in Germany next summer, the first time a major tournament has been hosted there since the 2006 World Cup.

However, Germany have been in poor form leading up to the tournament, with some suggesting that they might not have qualified if it were not for their automatic place as hosts.

As such, Hansi Flick’s tenure was ended earlier in September, following an embarrassing 4-1 defeat against Japan.

He had won only four of his last 17 games, despite his stellar record as Bayern Munich boss, where he won a Bundesliga-Champions League-DFB Pokal Treble before taking on the national team job.
