Henri Lansbury has bravely revealed how he overcame testicular cancer during his time at Nottingham Forest.

The former Arsenal academy star called an end to his playing career during the summer, as he set his sights on a brand new career outside of being a footballer.

Now, following his retirement, Lansbury has opened up on one of the most difficult moments of his career, which came during his time at Forest.

The midfielder played for Forest between 2012-2017 and, during that time, was forced to overcome the worrying health issue, thanks to club doctors.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Lansbury said: ‘I was in the shower after training one day and was obviously having a feel as I was washing myself and I felt a lump. It was a little pea-sized lump.

‘Over time I thought it would go away but a couple months passed and it was still there. We broke up for the summer, about to go on holiday… but it was eating me away for a few months.

‘Obviously having it, not telling anyone and just trying to deal with it myself. And it came to the point where I thought I had to see someone and someone had to help me out.

‘First of all, I just went down to the local hospital to see if I could get it checked out. But they said the lead time was a few weeks. Obviously, going on holiday, I didn’t want to go away with it.

‘So I had to phone the club and ask for help. They put me in contact with someone to go get it checked out. Had a scan there and he said ‘alright we’ll give you your results in a bit’.

‘As I’ve left to get in my car, the doctor from Nottingham Forest has called me and said: ‘Go and pack a bag. You’re going back in for the operation tonight. It was a bit fast but glad to get it out’.

The ex-Gunners midfielder began his career in North London, where he was a highly-rated youngster and graduated to the first team under Arsene Wenger.

After making eight appearances for Arsenal, he went on to represent Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Bristol City, as well as earn 17 England U21 Caps.

He was last seen as part of the Luton squad that won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in June, but upon the expiry of his contract at Kenilworth Road he has decided to take his career down a different path.

The 32-year-old is heading to Monaco to work on the French side’s pitches, after coming up with a new formula for fertiliser.

Speaking to talkSPORT, former Gunners youngster Lansbury revealed his plans and his excitement at taking the business, Grass Gains, across Europe.

‘It came about during the first lockdown when I was stuck at home and got into gardening,’ Lansbury explained.

‘I started to spray my weeds with toxic stuff and put toxic fertiliser down and my missus wasn’t too happy about the kids running on the grass straight after.

‘I was trying to usher them off and she said ‘why can’t they just make an organic fertiliser?

‘I put my head together with my mate and me and the boys have cracked on and taken it to another level.’
