The game between Granada and Athletic Bilbao was postponed after a fan suffered a cardiac arrest and died in the stands.

Granada said the fan had been a season ticket holder for 16 years. No further details were given about the fan’s identity.

Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon rushed to get the referee’s attention around the 15th minute after Granada fans told him about the problem with one of the supporters at Los Carmenes Stadium.

The match continued for about five minutes when it was finally stopped again as doctors continued to work on the fan. 

Team doctors left their benches to try to help.

Players stayed on the field until about the 40th minute before going into the locker rooms.

The referee eventually called off the game and the league confirmed the death of the fan.

Match will restart on Monday night from the 17th minute with Athletic leading 1-0. 

Inaki Williams had put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute.

The game was stopped around the 15th minute when officials were alerted to a problem in the stands.

As the person received ongoing medical treatment for a suspect heart attack, the players were eventually taken off the field.

LaLiga later confirmed the supporter had died and the match would be rescheduled.

‘Granada CF vs. Athletic Club de Bilbao has been suspended following the tragic death of a fan at the Estadio Nuevo los Carmenes,’ a league statement read.

‘Our condolences go out to their family and friends, as well as to all Granada CF fans. A rescheduled date and time for the match will be announced in the near future.’

A statement from Granada added: ‘We want to send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends, as well as to the entire Granada family.’

Athletic Bilbao said in a statement: ‘LaLiga and the two clubs have agreed to call off the match due to the death of a fan at Los Carmenes.

‘Athletic Club expresses its deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with the person’s family and loved ones.’

Following discussions between the clubs and the governing bodies, it was decided the match would be rescheduled to Monday, restarting from the 17th minute.

A statement from the league read: ‘At the request of LALIGA, the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) competition judge has ruled that the Granada-Athletic fixture, suspended today due to the death of a fan during the match, will resume tomorrow – December 11th – at 9pm. The match will restart from the 17th minute.’
