Erik ten Hag reviews Newcastle defeat
Gary Neville has hinted that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is heading for the sack as he laid into the ‘woeful’ Red Devils. United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup courtesy of a dismal 3-0 defeat by Newcastle on Wednesday.
Ten Hag’s side have now suffered losses by that same scoreline in consecutive matches at Old Trafford, following a reverse in Sunday’s Manchester derby. Defeat by Newcastle was United’s eighth in 15 matches across all competitions this term.
Neville believes that the Carabao Cup tie epitomised the difference in direction between the Red Devils and Newcastle. Technical director Dan Ashworth has transformed the Magpies’ fortunes.
Hinting at a possible Ten Hag departure, Neville went on to say that United fans “know how it ends”. “On my way up to the gantry last night I bumped into Dan Ashworth,” the former defender wrote on X.
“He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle. He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing.

“Will work with his coach, recruitment team and other departments coherently and calmly. In the last two matches Manchester United have played two clubs that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it.
“The complete opposite of United. We haven’t got a sporting director! I used to travel up to Newcastle and feel sorry for their great fans when the energy and enthusiasm had been sapped from them under Mike Ashley. It was painful to see.
“Last night we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing. Every single United fan bored and flat. On the pitch the players in shock, the performances woeful and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough.”

Ten Hag has vowed to fight on despite strong scrutiny of his management. The Dutchman enjoyed a positive first season at Old Trafford, finishing fourth, winning the Carabao Cup and reaching the FA Cup final.
But he appears to be struggling in his bid to turn around United’s form despite a £150m summer spending spree. “I understand when the results are not there it is logical they are questioning that,” Ten Hag said.
“But I am confident I can do it. At this moment we are in a bad place and I take responsibility for it. But I am a fighter. I see it as a challenge.”
