FPL injury update with Martinelli, Son, Nkunku, Alisson fitness latest for GW16

Arsenal ‘ready to sell Thomas Partey’ to raise funds for three-man January transfer list

With Premier League matches coming thick and fast, injury problems are stacking up at every club. As a result, Fantasy Premier League managers are facing a tough task when trying to assess who is likely to be available for this weekend’s round of fixtures. Express Sport provides you with the biggest injury concerns and doubts ahead of Gameweek 16…

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has been one of the highest-scoring players in Fantasy Premier League so far this season, so his owners will have been watching on in horror as he trudged off of the pitch against West Ham in midweek with a back injury.

The South Korean international is a doubt for Spurs’ match against Newcastle on Sunday, with Ange Postecoglou unwilling to put a timeframe on his absence. The ex-Celtic boss said: “Nothing new really. The last update I got late last night was that he was a bit sore last night after the game. We’ll have to see today.”

Mikel Arteta had better news in Arsenal’s press conference, squashing doubts about Gabriel Martinelli’s availability ahead of his side’s trip to Villa Park. The Spaniard said: “I think everybody is going to be okay”, with Thomas Partey the sole absentee at the Emirates Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp also had a reasonably positive update for FPL owners who own Alisson, revealing that the Liverpool shot-stopper has returned to first-team training recently. Asked about the Brazilian goalkeeper on Friday, he explained: “Yesterday he trained normal.”

It is unclear whether Alisson will be ready to face off against Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Caoimhin Kelleher keen to remain between the sticks and prove his worth before the January transfer window opens.

Chelsea signing Christopher Nkunku is still waiting to make his competitive debut for the club, and FPL managers will be reluctant to purchase the France international until Mauricio Pochettino is more positive in his assessment of the playmaker. Asked about the availability of the ex-RB Leipzig star earlier this week, the Blues boss explained: “Still assessing day by day, see tomorrow. I don’t believe that he will be involved but we need to assess day by day. We see also if Malo Gusto can be available.”

With Ivan Toney out until late January, Bryan Mbeumo has proved a popular FPL selection – and he has rewarded the faith of many with several goals and assists. However, Brentford’s injury crisis is continuing to worsen as the winger is ruled out for the next few weeks with an ankle injury that he sustained against Brighton in midweek.

Speaking about his new absentee, Thomas Frank explained: “It is bad. He’ll have a scan later, but we don’t know the exact number of weeks he will be out. He will definitely not play on Saturday [against Sheffield United].”
