Fernandes said ‘you think it’s going to be easy’ after Bournemouth maul Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes has hit out at his Manchester United team-mates following their dismal 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Bournemouth.

Goals from Dominic Solanke, Phillip Billing and Marcos Senesi put United to the sword as the Cherries ran riot at Old Trafford to consign Erik ten Hag's men to their seventh Premier League defeat of the season. The abysmal result ruined what had been a fabulous week for United following their 2-1 win over Chelsea and the trio of monthly awards handed to Ten Hag, Harry Maguire and Alejandro Garnacho.

Speaking after the game, captain Fernandes, who picked up a yellow card which rules him out of next week's clash with arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield, blasted his team's performance. And he even admitted the Red Devils underestimated Bournemouth.

"We lacked many things and that's why we don't get the result today," he said. "Everything was lower than the levels in the game before and that's why when you play teams like Bournemouth, who are really aggressive and on the front foot, they press you, and you think it's going to be easy, you get these kinds of results.

"Everything was underperforming. Creativity, movement and arriving with bodies into the box. Most of the time we arrived with one or two players, but in the last game we had more getting in the box to score a goal."

He added: "Today, it was, as I said, underperforming. We just lack consistency and that's a big part of football. It's really important to be consistent every game and we're not being."

Saturday's 3-0 defeat means United have now lost more times at home since Sir Alex Ferguson retired a decade ago (35) than they did during the legendary Scot's 21-season spell in charge of the club (34). It was also their fourth home defeat of the season, and the ninth time they've conceded three or more goals in a game.

But despite the doom-and-gloom, they're sixth in the Premier League and just three points behind Manchester City. Though that gap will stretch to six if Pep Guardiola's side beat Luton today.

Up next for United is a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, one they must win to stand any chance of progressing to the last 16. Then, after facing Liverpool at Anfield next weekend, they'll play West Ham in London before welcoming in-form Aston Villa to Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
