A former Arsenal favourite was among those in attendance as Tottenham earned a 2-0 win on Monday night to return to the top of the Premier League table.

Tottenham’s impressive start to the season under Ange Postecoglou continued with Son Heung-min and James Maddison on target for the hosts.

The comfortable victory saw Tottenham back to the summit, with seven wins and two draws from their opening nine matches.

Postecoglou’s side, who remain unbeaten in the Premier League this term, opened up a two point lead over Man City and Arsenal with their latest win.

Spurs rise back above Arsenal in the table was watched by one of the Gunners former stars.

Andrey Arshavin, who scored 31 goals in 144 matches for Arsenal between 2009 to 2013, shared videos on social media of him taking in the action on Monday night.

The former Russian international posted ‘On the way to White Hart Lane, Tottenham’ on Instagram as he took a London Overground train to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Arshavin then shared clips showing his view from the stands, as he joined the 61,286 crowd for the evening fixture.

The now 42-year-old remains best remembered at Arsenal for his four goals in an astonishing 4-4 draw against Liverpool at Anfield back in 2009.

Arshavin left Arsenal in 2013 after falling out of favour and returned to his former side Zenit Saint Petersburg, before ending his playing career five years later playing for Kairat in Kazakhstan.

The forward, who was one of Russia’s stars of their run to the Euro 2008 semi-finals, could have joined Tottenham following the tournament.

Arshavin claimed at the time he hoping Zenit officials would have ‘had enough of Arshavin’s whining’ as he attempted to force through a move to Spurs in the transfer window.

A protracted transfer ultimately failed to materialise, with Arshavin ultimately joining Arsenal in January 2009 in a deal that beat the transfer deadline.

‘I was not against a move to Tottenham,’ Arshavin later reflected.

‘If it was down to just me to reach an agreement, the move could have taken place.’

Arshavin’s debut for the Gunners could have come against their North London rivals, but he was an interested onlooker again with his first matchday experience coming as an unused substitute in a goalless draw in February 2009.
