    David Beckham has been famous for three decades – but he might never be as famous as Homer Simpson.

    The cartoon character, star of The Simpsons, almost met the England football icon when he joined LA Galaxy before the cameo was snubbed by Al Jean.

    Beckham, who is know adored for bringing Lionel Messi to the MLS with Inter Miami, was a trailblazer for the league after leaving Real Madrid back in 2007.

    He spent five years with the club before leaving in 2012, winning two MLS cups – but not earning enough fame to become an animated character.

    Executive producer Al told the Daily Mirror back in 2010: "I had to phone David Beckham to tell him sorry – I didn't think he was a big enough star for an American audience."

    He added: "I got a lot of grief about that.

    "Some people got angry about it and told me: 'I bet you would have put George Best on'. But I would have turned him down too."

    The Simpsons has been running since 1989, putting 750 episodes on the airwaves across 34 seasons across broadcasts in more than 20 countries.

    Beckham's worldwide fame is shown by his Instagram following of 82 million, having played in Italy, France and Spain as well as England and the United States.

    The Manchester United icon and his family are said to have a net worth in the region of £1billion thanks to their huge sponsorship deals.

    Beckham famously posed for Calvin Klein and was the face of Haig Club Whisky for numerous television adverts.

    His Instagram now includes EA Sports FC sponsored posts having received criticism for being the face of the Qatar World Cup.

    Beckham, who made an estimated £150million, said in a statement via his publicist: "We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region."
