Chelsea star Ben Chilwell ‘can’t catch a break’ and confirms injury lay-off

Devastated Chelsea star Ben Chilwell says he ‘can’t catch a break’ after his latest injury setback. The England international is expected to be sidelined until December with a hamstring problem as Mauricio Pochettino’s injury list continues to mount.

Chilwell suffered the problem in the closing stages of last Wednesday’s victory over Brighton. Pochettino initially hoped that the issue was not long-term.

However, it has now been widely reported that the 26-year-old could miss out until at least December. He is certain to miss England’s final Euro 2024 qualifiers before the draw for next summer’s tournament in Germany is made on December 2.

Chilwell has confirmed the injury in a heartbreaking statement on Instagram, insisting to fans that he is more frustrated by his injury issues than they are.

The left-back said: “Can’t catch a break. Believe me, I am more frustrated than you guys. All I can do now is help the team as best as I can from the sidelines, until I can get back to giving everything for the club on the pitch again.

“Ups and downs but that’s life. Just focused on getting this club back where it deserves to be. Thank you as always for the love, Chels fans.”

Chilwell missed Chelsea’s win over Fulham on Monday night, with Levi Colwill impressing at left-back. He is added to a growing list of injury concerns for Pochettino.

Goalscorer Mykhaylo Mudryk hobbled off after bagging his first strike for the club against the Cottagers. The Chelsea boss is hoping that the issue is not serious.

“Pleased for Mudryk and for Armando. For Misha (Mudryk) he scored his first goal in the Premier League and for Armando after a long period out he scored again.

“The competition is really good for the team. I hope Misha is not a big issue because he feel something in his quad at the end of the first half and hopefully he arrives on Saturday.”

Pochettino will need to decide who replaces Chilwell while he is absent, amid several injuries in defence. Colwill can play at left-back but is more comfortable in central defence, while the left-footed Marc Cucurella played at right-back against Fulham due to the absence of Reece James and Malo Gusto.
