Chelsea may have another Mohamed Salah on their hands in ‘phenomenal’ player

Chelsea have been warned they must be patient with Mykhaylo Mudryk as he could become another Mohamed Salah if he leaves the club. Blues legend Pat Nevin is confident the Ukraine star can turn things around at Stamford Bridge if given the opportunity to do so.

Mudryk joined Chelsea in January for a mega £88million fee. Arsenal were firmly in the race to sign the winger but lost out to their London rivals.

But it couldn’t have gone much worse for Mudryk in his first eight months in the Premier League. He is yet to score in his 22 appearances in all competitions, registering just two assists.

He quickly fell out of favour under Graham Potter and was barely given a chance by interim boss Frank Lampard at the back end of last season. Mauricio Pochettino has started Mudryk in the last two Premier League matches against Bournemouth and Aston Villa but he is yet to take his opportunity.

Nevin, though, has seen enough to believe there is a star waiting to perform. Chelsea allowed both Salah and Kevin de Bruyne to leave early in their careers and they have gone on to become world-class players.

Nevin does not want to see Chelsea make the same mistake with Mudryk. He told OLBG: “There’s a reason why Arsenal wanted Mudryk – he’s phenomenal. His pace is ridiculous and so are his skills.

“He had different problems to everyone else as he was a Ukrainian lad coming into a new country. There was also a massive transfer fee hanging over him, though the pressure is slightly off now due to the other fees Chelsea have paid.

“I think he has the potential to be a great forward and a great creator. He came into a side that wasn’t playing well, but he didn’t make it easy for himself. His numbers last season were not good.

“I always look at the underlying player and I don’t think Chelsea want to lose him. Chelsea know better than anyone that if you let a player go, they can be world-class somewhere else.”

Nevin reckons Mudryk will start to showcase his true talent once Chelsea start performing as a team. He added: “He came in in January, which is a tough time for players to arrive.

“It’s early days this season, and I still have great hopes for Mudryk when the team starts clicking. That could be later this season or next season.

“He has all the qualities that defenders hate playing against. If Chelsea did cut their losses, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him shine somewhere else. He’s still only 22.”
