Earl and England look ahead to Rugby World Cup semi-final
Alan Shearer’s daughter Holly has been dating England rugby star Joe Marchant since February 2022 – much to the delight of her father, who is just happy she isn’t dating a footballer. The popular Match of the Day pundit appears to have a good relationship with Marchant judging from social media.
Shortly before Marchant jetted off to the World Cup with his England team-mates, the couple enjoyed a romantic trip to Greece and posted plenty of snaps from their sizzling getaway. The lovebirds filled their followers’ timelines with pictures of sandy shores and breathtaking sunsets but it was Marchant’s swimwear that caught Shearer’s eye.
Among the collage of pictures was a photo of Marchant relaxing by the pool in some very colourful speedos. Always the joker, Shearer commented: “WTF are the smugglers you have on?” in reference to his turquoise trunks.
When Shearer was asked about his daughter’s relationship with Marchant, the Newcastle United legend and all-time Premier League top scorer expressed his relief, quipping: “I’m just glad it’s not a footballer.”
Marchant was in excellent form for England against Fiji last week as he moved from right-wing to outside-centre. The 27-year-old stormed through the Fijian line to extend the Red Roses’ lead to ten points with a sublime try.
Although Fiji came back late it was not enough to overcome Steve Borthwick’s men, who were able to see off their adversaries thanks to some brilliant kicking from Owen Farrell. After the game, Borthwick gave credit to his players for their hard work on the pitch. “I thought the players were magnificent, the whole squad worked hard to get that result,” he told ITV.

“After the performance, you have to give immense credit to Fiji they’ve had a fantastic World Cup and I’m delighted we found a way to win that game. For the vast majority we were in control there was a spell midway through the second half where they scored back-to-back tries and they’re the only team in the world who can do that – but I was pleased with how the players handled it thereafter.
“A lot has been written about these players and what I see is a group who can handle and rise to these occasions. We’ve had great week it’s been a brilliant part of the world to prepare but Paris is a bit special so we are looking forward to it.
“We don’t forget there’s a fair number of people who said we won’t make it out of group and a fair number who said we would lose tonight and we’re going to be written off again I’m sure. But this team is determined to be successful.”
