Max Verstappen wins third consecutive Formula One world championship

Kelly Piquet, Max Verstappen’s girlfriend and daughter of three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet, has made an emotional statement after admitting that she has received death threats and abuse on social media for her comments on the war between Israel and Palestine. Piquet has been vocal on Instagram as she has been calling for peace and a cease-fire.

Piquet released a lengthy statement on her Instagram story as she explained her activism online, while urging her followers who disagree with her to take their attention elsewhere as the model and motorsport columnist revealed that she had received “highly abusive language” and death threats.

She wrote: “I can’t stop thinking about all pain, suffering, mourning, trauma, shock, despair that the Palestinians in Gaza are living through right now. To imagine all the young innocent souls that have been lost, entire families wiped out, parent-less children, and parents who’ve had to hug their dead children.

“I’m also thinking about the hostages that are in the hands of Hamas, and thankful to see that four of them have now been safely released. But the images and videos I am witnessing daily from the horror happening in Gaza is beyond comprehension.

“Instead of coming in my DMs with your death threats, highly abusive language, and other obscene pictures, UNFOLLOW ME. This is not a ~conflict~ this is a genocide. My follower count or brand deals are not more important than a life I could be saving by advocating to stop this. And neither are yours.”

Piquet had been in attendance at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday to watch her boyfriend Verstappen recover from a sixth-placed start to win in Austin, Texas. The Red Bull man was also on the receiving end of some backlash as supporters decided to boo him as he took to the podium to celebrate his victory.

Piquet appeared perplexed at the boos while the name of Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez was also chanted, though the US GP winner did not seem fazed by the reaction. He told ViaPlay: “No, no. In the end, I’m the one who takes the silverware home, so all fine by me!”

But away from the track, Piquet continued her message of peace by calling for a ceasefire in Gaza despite the death threats and backlash she has been subjected to online.

She added: “Express that you want this ethnic cleansing to end. NOW. It’s only Human to live in freedom and in peace. It’s only Human to ask for a cease fire. It’s only Human to ask for the protection of all CHILDREN. I stand for peace. I stand for love. I stand for freedom.”
