Felipe Massa ‘expects’ Ferrari support in bid to overturn Lewis Hamilton’s title

Lewis Hamilton commits to Mercedes until 2025

Felipe Massa “expects” support from Ferrari as the former F1 star attempts to legally overturn the result of the 2008 world championship, which saw Lewis Hamilton win the first of his seven titles. Massa has begun a legal challenge to seek damages for what he has described as a “conspiracy” against him 15 years ago.

Earlier this year, former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone admitted that he was aware of ‘Crashgate’ – the scandal surrounding Nelson Piquet Jr who was accused of deliberately crashing in Singapore in 2008 in order to help team-mate Fernando Alonso win the race.

The crash came at a point when Massa was leading and gave Alonso a major advantage, being the only driver who had already pitted, with Massa ending up finishing 13th and Hamilton took third – later beating the Brazilian by just a single point in his way to a first world title.

Following Ecclestone’s revelation, Massa and his lawyers sent a letter to F1 and governing body the FIA seeking compensation for the lost title.

Having started legal action over what he described to be a “conspiracy” with an eight-page Letter Before Claim, Massa believes that he will be able to count on the support of his former team Ferrari – even though they are yet to express their willingness to help.

“I have one certainty: that title is mine and it is Ferrari’s 16th drivers’ title,” Massa told Italian state broadcaster TG1. “I have hired a team of very strong lawyers. We will fight to the end to obtain justice in this sport.

“I don’t understand why a case of manipulation cannot be verified in the way right, even if a year, two years or 15 years later. At this moment I have not yet had the support of Ferrari, but I expect help from them. I am optimistic: I will fight for the justice until the end.”

Massa has threatened to ramp up his efforts if F1 or the FIA do not respond before Friday, September 8, having been informed of the 42-year-old’s legal challenge in the letter to Stefano Domenicali Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
