Raducanu says coaches ‘can’t keep up with my questions’ or ‘tell me what to do’

Emma Raducanu has explained the reasons behind her high turnover of coaches after splitting with a fifth coach in just two years.

Raducanu, who shocked the world to win the US Open in 2021 without dropping a set, has since been struck by poor form and injuries while splitting with leading coaches including Nigel Sears, Torben Beltz and Dmitry Tursunoy.

Having split with Sebastian Sachs earlier in 2023, Raducanu has been asked for the reasoning behind her decisions after slipping to world no 280 following surgery on both of her ankles as well as her wrist.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, the 21-year-old said: "I ask my coaches a lot of questions. On certain occasions they haven't been able to keep up with the questions I've asked and maybe that's why it ended."

The 20-year-old added: "It's something I've always done. I keep provoking and asking questions to coaches and challenging their thinking as well.

"I'm not someone that you can just tell me what do and I'll do it, I need to understand why and then I'll do it."

Raducanu, who was born in Canada to a mother from China and father from Romania, was raised in Bromley and represents Great Britain.

She stole the hearts of the nation when reaching the Wimbledon fourth round in 2021, winning the US Open without dropping a set in her second Grand Slam appearance.

She added of her return plans: "Next season I'll be back.

"This season all the slams were finished so it was difficult to watch them go by but I was trying to stay in my lane as much as possible and keep focused on my recovery."

Raducanu then said of her critics: "The fact they're still talking about me even though I'm not at these events is just a compliment."
