Adam Johnson’s mum shares heartbreaking tribute to hockey star, 29, after death

Kari Johnson, the mother of ice hockey star Adam Johnson who sadly passed away following a freak accident on the ice, has described losing her son as having "lost of my heart."

On Saturday night, the 29-year-old Nottingham Panthers player was involved in a freak accident whilst playing against the Sheffield Steelers, which saw his throat cut by a skate blade. The incident happened during the second period of the contest at Sheffield's Utilita Arena, with the 8,000 fans in attendance all asked to leave the stadium following the horrifying sequence of events.

The match was subsequently abandoned. Writing on Facebook following the shock passing of son, which was confirmed on Sunday morning, Kari Johnson wrote an emotional tribute. It read: "I lost half of my heart today. Love you always." She upload two pictures of herself with her son alongside the tragic message.

Tributes flooded in following the news of Johnson's sad passing. One individual commented on the Facebook post: "I’m so sorry to you and the whole family.. love and hugs to all of you." A second said: "I have no words Kari. I’m just shocked. My thoughts to you and your family."

A third wrote: "No words can express our sorrow, Kari. We are heartbroken for you and your family." A fourth added: "So very sorry for your loss, Adam was always a great kid who couldn't be mean to a soul. Sending comfort to you all during this tragic time."

The clash between the Panthers and Steelers was a Challenge Cup contest, which was stopped on 35 minutes and later abandoned. Johnson was immediately taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital, with footage showing him being struck in the neck by the ice skate before collapsing.

In a statement following the news Johnson had confirmed to have died, the Panthers outlined their devastation at the shock accident, calling the 29-year-old "not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great team-mate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him."

The statement read: "The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night. The panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing.

"Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today’s news.

"The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most testing of circumstances. Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great team-mate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him. The club will dearly miss him and will never forget him.
