Rory McIlroy has been caught in a furious exchange with Justin Thomas’ caddie as tensions rise between Team Europe and USA heading into Sunday at the Ryder Cup. Tensions were already high on the 18th hole with McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick tied with Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark.

Team USA hadn’t had much to shout about in the opening two days of the Ryder Cup with the Europeans running riot. But Cantlay gave USA a chance on the last by holing a huge pressure putt from long range.

His putt sparked wild celebrations on and around the green from Cantlay’s team-mates. McIlroy though still had his putt to try and halve the hole and the Northern Irishman was clearly unimpressed.

He appeared to say something to Cantlay while lining up his putt with the pair sharing a brief exchange on the green. McIlroy ended up missing his putt with USA winning the afternoon session 3-1 to give themselves a fighting chance going into Sunday.

But tensions from that result spilled over into the car park as everyone was heading home. McIlroy was caught on camera in a heated exchange with Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay, Justin Thomas’ caddie before Shane Lowry stepped in to put a stop to it all.

The 34-year-old appeared to be pointing at someone out of shot and was clearly irate. Mackay had his hands up in the air in an almost apologetic manner, but that didn’t calm McIlroy down.

Lowry had to physically push McIlroy away into the car to avoid the incident going any further.
