Boxing trainer spotted speaking on the phone while treating fighter mid-bout

A boxing trainer has caused a stir after he was filmed speaking on the phone during his fighter’s bout on Saturday night.

In the amazing scenes the coach, who was in the corner of Polish boxer Konrad Czajkowski in Newcastle, spoke on the phone as he was giving instructions to his fighter. The unknown trainer was freely speaking on the device in the corner. There are no rules under British Boxing Board of Control guidelines to stop the practice.

But it was seen as bizarre as Czajkowski sat on his stool. The Polish boxer was eventually stopped in the fifth round of the bout against Owen Rees, the English light-welterweight prospect in just his second fight.

Former world super-featherweight champion Barry Jones was on commentary duty on DAZN and spotted the coach on the device as he said “He’s on the phone here, Czajkowski’s corner”.

Darren Barker, the former IBF middleweight title holder, joked that the coach was sorting out his “gas and electricity bill”. Social media users were left equally as perplexed.

The bout was on the undercard of Shabaz Masoud’s narrow win over Jose Sanmartin in Newcastle on Saturday. Masoud is now 12-0, with four knockouts to his name as he retained his WBA Intercontinental belt in the north east.

Despite Masoud's victory, Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn was left far from impressed with his fighter's performance. He said: "If we’re talking about Shabaz Masoud as a world championship contender, miles off the pace, miles off the pace tonight,

"We’re talking about a guy that looked like a British title, European title fighter, not someone that looked special enough to win a world title. We know he’s got the ability to do it, but tonight wasn’t good enough."
