Tiger Woods opens up about struggles since car crash

Rory McIlroy has insisted that Tiger Woods is the “biggest golf nerd” as he opened up on the pair’s relationship ahead of this year’s Ryder Cup. Although the American great will not be competing as he continues his rehabilitation from a subtalar fusion operation as a result of his 2021 car crash, he may be giving Team Europe some tips through McIlroy.

The duo clearly share a close bond having competed against each other on the PGA Tour, while also playing together as a team in The Genesis Invitational earlier this year, but the 47-year-old who is tied for most tour wins of all time has seemingly been giving his European counterpart some tricks of the trade.

McIlroy opened up on how he and Woods speak regularly regarding golf, while dubbing the American a “nerd” after revealing that he has been taught some very secretive lessons that only a select few may have received previously.

Speaking to Off The Ball, when asked how often McIlroy and Woods speak with each other, the Northern Ireland star replied: “Every other day almost. He’s a great resource and if there’s anything I ever need to ask… we don’t live too far away from each other in Florida.

“He has shown me a few things that I don’t know if he’s shown anyone else but Charlie (Woods’ won) maybe JT (Justin Thomas) as well. Just some different shots around the greens, he’s the biggest golf nerd I have ever come across. I mean he knows everything about everything, he watched everything.

“He lets on that he doesn’t but he watches so much and he analyses guys’ moves and he just loves the game. I think for him, what set him apart from everyone else when he was at his best, he loved the pursuit of just trying to master his craft.

“That really comes out when he is describing things to you, even if you’ve got a chip shot and it’s going from right to left slope on the green, he is hitting it with cut spin to take out the slope… I’ve never seen anyone else like that.”

Off the course Woods and McIlroy are also business partners, having created the TGL golf league that sees tournaments played virtually and has also attracted the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Serena Williams and Steph Curry as investors.

Those on Team USA’s Ryder Cup team will hope that their compatriot has not given McIlroy any significant edge over their players at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, with the tournament beginning on September 25 with McIlroy already confirmed in Luke Donald’s team.
