Lionesses' hero Mary Earps has been named as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The England and Manchester United goalkeeper was the bookies' favourite and she picked up the award on Tuesday evening. Earps is now the second Lioness to win the prestigious award, following in the footsteps of Beth Mead.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper beat out England cricketer Stuart Broad, who finished second, and heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who came third, to claim the award, which was voted for by the British public.

Earps – who wowed on the night in a stunning lacy black dress – was one of Sarina Wiegman's stars over the summer, as the Lionesses came so close to conquering the world Down Under. While she was fantastic throughout the competition – it was one moment in the final that immortalised her.

After being handed the award, Earps said: "First of all I'd like to say how humbled I am to be on a list of such incredible athletes. I've really enjoyed hearing your stories tonight.

"I think sport is a fantastic thing that brings the world together and to hear you guys talk and to hear your guys' journeys, I just think it's unbelievable so congratulations to you all. Also, thanks for voting for me, everyone who voted for me, I should have probably started with that one.

"Thank you very much. I'm very honoured and humbled and I feel like this for me is the ultimate all-time sporting accolade and I think us as Lionesses and obviously at United as well, we've had an incredible couple of years but this is just, yeh, wow.

"It's not been the easiest of journeys but I definitely wouldn't be where I am today without the help of a number of incredible people in my corner."

Wiegman's side were already 1-0 down when a lengthy VAR check deemed Kiera Walsh had handled the ball in the area. England had just started to mount some pressure on the Spanish defence, and they needed Earps to come up big.

The Red Devils star dived down to the left, catching Jenni Hermoso’s tame strike. However, it didn't matter to Earps – who let out an almighty "f*** off" to celebrate.

The Lionesses' dreams were reduced to tears, when they fell short to a magnificent Spanish side. And Earps would suffer heartbreak domestically too, United lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup final and the Blues also pipped them to the WSL title.

However, Earps' involvement in sport this year can't be measured by results on the pitch. English fans were furious over the summer when Nike decided not to release a replica version of her shirt.

A petition was set up online, and by the time Earps had kept England within a shot of lifting the gold, it had acquired over 100,000 signatures. Nike's hand was forced and a limited number were put on sale in October: they sold out instantly.

The shirts have since been listed online twice more – selling out in minutes both times. Speaking about the overwhelming support, Earps said: "I can’t thank the public enough for their support and, really, we wouldn’t be in this position without.

“We’ve really changed the world, so thank you to everyone.”
