Roy Keane leapt to Manchester United's defence after Virgil van Dijk claimed only Liverpool wanted the win in their goalless draw.

Reds captain Van Dijk riled up Red Devils legend Keane with his post-match comments which he deemed were "arrogant" in the Sky Sports studio after the stalemate at Anfield on Sunday (December 17) afternoon.

The Dutchman had also argued United were "buzzing" with the point while his side were disappointed, adding: "We want to win every game of course, especially if you play against a team like them."

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels. Sky Sports is the only way to watch all the action this year.

£22 a month

Reacting after his interview, Keane took issue and went on the type of lengthy rant that has made him a fan-favourite pundit over the years.

He said: "A bit of arrogance from Van Dijk dissing United, he needs a reminder himself he’s playing for a club that’s won one title in 30 odd years.

"Man United are in a difficult place, like Liverpool were in a difficult place for many years before this – maybe that arrogance backfired on him today."

Do you agree with Keane or Sturridge? Let us know in the comments section below

His co-pundit Daniel Sturridge saw the situation differently, responding: "I don’t know if that’s arrogance personally." But Keane insisted: "That’s arrogance, he said Man United were buzzing. I wouldn’t be disrespecting clubs like he is."

Sturridge continued: "I don't think he's disrespecting them, I think he's disappointed with how they're performed, looking at the stats, looking at the way they've controlled the game."

The debate rumbled on for some time, with Keane later revisiting the issue. "He spoke about only one team wanting to win but you still have to go out there and do it," he declared.

"That’s what great teams do – championship winning teams like your Man United's, your Man City's, your Liverpool's of the 80’s.

"He shouldn’t be slagging the other team off like that. Sometimes you have to take a draw, you can’t win every game of football. What’s he talking about?"

Sturridge hit back: "What would you want him to say Roy? 'I'm happy with the point against Man United who at this present moment aren't performing like we are'?"

Keane answered: "I didn't like his message there. I think he's order out of order."

Before Sturridge concluded: "I think there's a level of respect there. I just think he's disappointed Liverpool didn't go out there today and do what they thought they would be able to do, it didn't work out for them."
