nominees Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The three luminaries have been in heated competition as the year draws to a close and honours are handed out, with Messi pipping his two rivals to the top spot in this year&#8217;s Ballon d&#8217;Or race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haaland came second in the prestigious international competition, with Mbappe &#8211; who faced off with Messi in the World Cup final last December &#8211; in third place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The world-class trio represent a finalist group narrowed down from the 12-man shortlist which included Premier League stars such as Declan Rice, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, and Bernardo Silva.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the period covered by the award runs from December 19 2022 to August 20 2023, Messi&#8217;s heroic World Cup final performance will not be under consideration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" finalist in the running for the storied award<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>The Inter Miami star, who won last year&#8217;s award in February 2023, will instead hope that his performances with his new club, including their Leagues Cup win this summer, are enough to buoy up his chances of taking home back-to-back trophies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But statistics have revealed that based on their 2023 club form, there could be a runaway winner waiting in the wings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the contest is to be judged on goalscoring ability, Haaland would be the outright victor, based on his toweing 44 goal haul, coupled with his 11 additional contributions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Messi can match the player with goal contributions, the playmaker has just 20 goals, for fewer than both the Norway international and Mbappe&#8217;s tally of 39.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As anticipated, Haaland&#8217;s expected goal sum also puts his rivals in the shade at 44.7 to Mbappe&#8217;s 35.2, and Messi&#8217;s comparatively paltry 15.9.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haaland has however played far more fixtures than both of his competitors, a mammoth 54 to the France captain&#8217;s 42, and Messi&#8217;s 36 over the past year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Haaland leads in the lion&#8217;s share of the metrics, both Mbappe and Messi have greater accuracy, and an assassin&#8217;s eye for converting chances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Messi has a 34.9 per cent shot conversion rate compared to Haaland&#8217;s 23.5 per cent, and his passing accuracy also dwarfs the strikers, at 82.7 per cent to his foe&#8217;s 72.5 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Mbappe has the highest percentage by a slender margin, his sum sitting at 83.8 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Frenchman can&#8217;t match the World Cup winner for successful passes, however, having made 1259 to Messi&#8217;s 1558.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haaland&#8217;s 479 during the same period scarcely comes close.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After winning the Ballon d&#8217;Or and receiving a nomination from FIFA, Messi will also look to add to his awards tally this year at the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Osimhen of Napoli, Real Madrid&#8217;s Jude Bellingham, and Liverpool&#8217;s Mohamed Salah.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mbappe was named Ligue 1&#8217;s Player of the Year on the heels of yet another successful season with Paris Saint-Germain, and Haaland has also received a raft of awards for his Premier League showings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Picking up the Gerd Muller Trophy at the Ballon d&#8217;Or ceremony in October, the 23-year-old was previously named PFA Player&#8217;s Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, UEFA Men&#8217;s Player of the Year and the Premier League&#8217;s Player and Young
