Manchester United could be set to miss out on a chunk of Mason Greenwood’s transfer fee when he leaves the club.

Greenwood joined La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan deal on the final day of the summer transfer window. The one-time England international has since gone on to score four goals and register three assists in 13 appearances so far.

The 22-year-old’s move came after United announced that Greenwood would not be returning to the first-team fold. Their plan to initially re-integrate the player back into the squad faced huge backlash following the conclusion of their internal investigation after charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour, which were denied, were all dropped.

According to The Athletic, the club’s intention was for Greenwood to complete his rehabilitation on loan this term before making a permanent move away next summer. Getafe are interested in bringing him to the club on a permanent deal as it is something that the Madrid outfit could financially benefit from.

It’s said that there is a 20 per cent sell-on clause inserted into the loan contract of Greenwood at Getafe, meaning that the Spanish side can stand to profit from his sale from United, without even paying any loan fee for the player as well. A win-win situation for Getafe and another perplexing decision from United.

However, it also means for Getafe that should they buy Greenwood permanently, they would only have to pay 80 per cent of the agreed fee. The bizarre clause is supposedly viewed as a way to secure value regardless of his next move, which is not expected to be back to Old Trafford. Greenwood’s contract at United expires in 2025, though the club do have the option to extend for an extra year.

Regarding a possible deal, Getafe president Angel Corres said: “We have not talked about price. We have talked about looking at the situation and seeing what they propose because there has also been a change of shareholding there at Manchester (United).

“But we are still happy with the meetings and with the video conferences we have with them. It is still too early to consider either continuing for one more season or that they will propose a price and we will commit the whole (of the contract) because we have a percentage and to buy the rest.”
