Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is like a ‘rich drunk guy at a sporting dinner who buys all the memorabilia’, Chris Sutton has told Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Everton on Sunday, hot off the heels of losses to Newcastle and Manchester United in recent weeks, to leave them a lowly 12th in the Premier League.

That’s despite American owner Boehly spending over £1billion on new players in three transfer windows since he bought the club last year.

Chelsea’s bloated and disparate side are no closer to looking like a coherent team under Pochettino, who, remarkably, is calling for squad additions in January as he tries to turn things around.

Reacting to that, Sutton said: ‘That is pretty alarming. Pochettino nailing those colours to his mast that he needs more players in at this point in time.

‘They have been so odd this season. I think in many ways Pochettino has been getting away with it but you look at where they are in the league – they’re the sixth best team in London.

‘Think about that, when was the last time Chelsea were the sixth best team in London?

‘With the spend and it not coming together, I don’t know whether the pressure is on or not but they can’t keep tip-toeing through the season and people not putting them under scrutiny.

‘In their recent past, they have been serial winners, huge winners, won all the big trophies in the last 20 years in the Abramovich era.

‘Last year was disappointing and now people forget where Chelsea have been getting away with it this season – no European football, and that is a massive advantage.

‘How do you judge a manager fairly? On whether they are improving the team – and have they improved that much.

‘The one thing with Chelsea and the one thing they all have in common is that the owner has forced these players upon them and sort of said, “well, you’ll have to make the most of that.”

‘I’d compare Todd Boehly, in terms of the players bought in, to a rich drunk guys at a sporting dinner who buys all the memorabilia.

It was another game to forget as Chelsea slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park on Sunday

‘He wakes up the next morning and thought “I’ve bought all these things and don’t know what to do with them.”‘

Sutton, speaking to Mail Sport’s football editor Ian Ladyman on the bi-weekly show, added: ‘Pochettino is in place now to get the best out of this team and he is not doing it.

‘It’s a bit like Championship Manager. It was never going to be easy for Pochettino but it’s fair to say now we’re putting the boot into Manchester United and talking about their inconsistency, Chelsea have been so, so disappointing.’

The Blues are at home to Sheffield United on Saturday in a game they can ill-afford to drop more points in.
