Former Premier League defender Greg Halford once had to leave on loan, four days after receiving the keys to a house he had bought.

Halford, 39, became one of the many players to constantly find himself as a member of the loan army. The full back now plays for the popular Isthmian Football League side Hashtag United having joined them on a free transfer from Billericay Town in the summer of 2022.

However, he did go on to make 28 Premier League appearances over the course of spells with Reading, Sunderland and Wolves. But such was the regularity of his moves, he found himself heading to a new club soon after buying a house.

“I bought a place in Reading and I had the keys for four days," Halford said in a previous episode of the Under the Cosh podcast. "Then I moved to Sunderland.

But after one season with the club, he was then loaned to Portsmouth, who were struggling in the Championship at the time. While he was not so keen on a move to the south coast, then-Wolves boss Mick McCarthy managed to talk him into joining Pompey.

“He mentioned about Portsmouth and they were struggling at the time," Halford added. "They were at the bottom end of the Championship. I said I didn’t really want to go.

"I spoke to a few of the lads at Wolves, who said Portsmouth had come in for me. They was saying ‘you can do better than that and you might as well go top half of the Championship’. I actually turned down Portsmouth first and then things got worse at Wolves. Then I ended up going to Portsmouth in the end."

His stay at Pompey would go on to be extended for another year, before he found himself joining Nottingham Forest. After two years, he was loaned to Brighton and then Rotherham, before he went on to play for Birmingham, Cardiff City, Aberdeen, Southen United, Irish side Waterford and Billericay.
