Schalke’s Bundesliga 2 clash against Hansa Rostock on Sunday saw the first half last for a whopping 78 minutes.

Schalke – who were relegated from the Bundesliga last season as they continue to endure a torrid few years – have had a difficult start to life back in the second tier.

They have been closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table and picked up a crucial 2-0 victory over Hansa which pushed them two points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

However, the crunch clash – which was settled thanks to goals from Blendi Idrizi and Kenan Karaman – saw the first half play on for an astonishing 33 minutes extra.

In a pictured shared by a Schalke fan on social media of the clock showing the game being into the 71st minute, they said: ‘Don’t know to explain this but this is actually still the first half.’

Schalke’s Bundesliga 2 clash against Hansa Rostock saw the first half last for 78 minutes

A long delay was caused on 38 minute due to crowd trouble between both sets of supporters

A fan explained how the trouble led to the game being paused for approximately 30 minutes

They provided more context to the delays in a detailed post on their social media account

The supporter went onto explain the reasoning behind the lengthy first half as they added how the game was paused on 38 minutes due to crowd trouble between the two sets of supporters.

Following the resumption, Junior Brumado was then sent off after a long VAR check.

In a post on social media they said: ‘Game stopped on 38 mins for like almost half an hour due to us and Hansa fans breaking some glass wall between them, and I think shooting fireworks (or something that makes a loud bang at least) at each other.

‘Clock kept going, the game resumed, Hansa got a VAR red card immediately and now we’ve got 5 mins injury time haha desperate to score to see the first ever 80th-minute first-half goal.’

The longest football match recorded in history was Stockport County’s game with Doncaster Rovers in March 1946.

The game lasted for 203 minutes but ended as a 2-2 draw before Rovers won the replay 4-0.

The lengthy first half in Schalke’s game also comes after the longest games to have taken place in England’s top four tiers this season were revealed last month.

In an attempt to crackdown on time-wasting during matches, referees were given new directives ahead of the campaign.

This is similar to what happened at the World Cup in Qatar last year and as a result, injury time has regularly racked up into double figures in both halves, with this all done in an attempt to increase the amount of time the ball is in play for.

And in data released by Opta and published in The Athletic encompassing the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two, the eight longest games were revealed.

The longest games to have taken place in England so far this season were revealed last month

Remarkably, Stevenage – who are flying high in third place in League One after winning promotion last season – have been involved in four of the five lengthiest matches.

The only game to break up Stevenage’s dominance in the longest games stakes was Fulham’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United in October.

Aston Villa’s 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace in September ranked sixth after 112 minutes and two seconds of action, while Accrington Stanley’s match with Mansfield Town in League Two took 111 minutes and 34 seconds, came in in at seventh.

This meant that Tottenham’s pulsating encounter with Chelsea in November, which saw five goals, the same number disallowed, two red cards and several VAR delays, was only the eighth lengthiest of the campaign, after 111 minutes and 15 seconds of action.
