Arsenal fans were left seething when Gabriel Jesus was not awarded a penalty during their defeat to Aston Villa.

Mikel Arteta's side missed out on an opportunity to overtake Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, after Unai Emery's Villa side secured a 1-0 victory. John McGinn's first-half strike was enough to extend the Midlanders' remarkable Premier League home winning streak to 15 matches, while also moving them within two points of Jurgen Klopp's men.

However, Arsenal supporters think they were denied a chance to equalise from the penalty spot early in the second half when Douglas Luiz clipped the back of Jesus' leg in the penalty area while trying to clear the ball. After VAR chose not to give them a penalty, the Gunners' faithful were absolutely furious.

"He hooks Gabriel Jesus leg and takes him completely off balance. Corruption," one especially angry Arsenal supporter wrote. "It's really hard to see how this isn't a penalty. He just kicks him in the back of the leg after he touches the ball beyond," a second added.

A rather queasy Arsenal fan also commented: "Man look at this I feel sick," before a fourth asked: "How is this not given man… this ain't serious anymore. FFS."

A third supporter then tweeted: "How on Planet earth was this not given as a penalty… All my life I have seen it given." When asked about some of the VAR calls made during the match, a frustrated Arteta bluntly said: “It’s clear and obvious for me.”

However, Jesus did not sound as sure as his manager when he was directly asked about the incident. "I felt touch but I don't know the rules so probably for them it's no penalty," the Brazilian international said.

"I cant do nothing I felt someone touch me and anyway its their decision." When asked about Kai Havertz's late goal which was ruled out for a handball from the German, Jesus added: "I don't know if the goal is clear handball.

"We don't know we just have to accept it and focus to go again next game and then maybe we can have some better decisions." The Gunners finish their Champions League group-stage campaign with an away fixture against PSV, before hosting Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League five days later.
