London: Tottenham Hotspur’s inability to convert leads into Premier League points returned with a vengeance in a 2-1 home defeat by West Ham United as their winless run extended to five matches on Thursday (Friday AEDT).

A lacklustre West Ham were completely outplayed in the opening half in which the returning Cristian Romero’s header was scant reward for Tottenham’s domination.

But West Ham were much improved after the break and Jarrod Bowen’s equaliser in the 52nd minute changed the complexion of the derby as Tottenham’s early confidence ebbed away.

Tottenham then self-destructed in the 74th minute when Destiny Udogie’s under-hit back pass caused chaos and James Ward-Prowse tucked in a rebound after his initial shot rebounded back to him off the post.

West Ham comfortably soaked up some late Tottenham pressure and held on for a victory that moved them within three points of their London rivals.

Tottenham remain in fifth place with 27 points but have picked up only one point from their last five games having led 1-0 in all of them. West Ham are ninth with 24 points.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have just one point from their last five fixtures despite taking the lead in all of them.Credit: Getty

Things don’t get any easier for Spurs, who next host fellow Champions League aspirants Newcastle on Monday morning (AEDT), with Eddie Howe’s side set to be smarting from a shock 3-0 defeat at Everton.

The Toffees profited from two Kieran Trippier errors to score late goals through Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto at Goodison Park to move out of the relegation zone.

It was a deserved win for the Merseysiders against a depleted Newcastle, who have now lost as many games this season – five – as in the whole of the last campaign, and with a long injury list that has left them with 12 players sidelined.

McNeil robbed Trippier of the ball before unleashing a powerful left-footed drive into the far corner of the net with 12 minutes remaining. The England full-back again lost possession and Jack Harrison’s cross found Doucoure to side-foot home, before Beto’s first Premier League goal came in stoppage time.

Sports news, results and expert commentary. Sign up for our Sport newsletter.

Watch every match of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League on Stan Sport.
