Fans have been left staggered by a shocking kit clash during Manchester City’s visit to Aston Villa.

Fresh from three successive draws, Pep Guardiola’s side faced a tough trip to Villa Park to face Unai Emery’s in-form side. Villa, naturally, donned their traditional claret and blue kit while City wore their away shirts and shorts.

The trouble was, City’s change kit shared part of Villa’s colour scheme – a white shirt with claret trim and claret shorts. And City were unusually off-colour as they were penned back by a vibrant Villa side for long spells before Leon Bailey gave the hosts the lead on 74 minutes. It proved to be the only goal of the game as Villa secured a richly deserved victory.

Before the match, Guardiola claimed he would retire if City won the Treble again although, given his side’s recent performances, that may not be a decision he needs to make.

Guardiola was responding to a question from one of his former players, Gael Clichy, on Amazon Prime ahead of his side’s game at Aston Villa tonight. Clichy asked if his pre-season message to his players was to go for the Treble again, but the City boss said: “No, no, I think that is a mistake. The Treble? Forget about it. If we win the Treble again I retire, that's it.”
